Shield of Faith

Ephesians 6:16

Putting on the armor of God is right and necessary to enable us to withstand the ways of this world and to remain free from the dominion of darkness. By doing this we show our unreserved commitment and appreciation for all that Yeshua (Jesus) has done for us.

Titus 2:14 NLT He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing what is right.

Let us take up His shield of faith and use it…

Eph 6:16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. (NAS unless indicated)

Who is our shield?

Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great."

2Sam 22:3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, Thou dost save me from violence.

Benefit of a Shield:

Neh 4:16 And it came about from that day on, that half of my servants carried on the work while half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows, and the breastplates…

Ps 18:35 Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation...

Ps 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him... (faith)

THE SHIELD

Easton

Shield - used in defensive warfare, varying at different times and under different circumstances in size, form, and material (1 Sam. 17:7; 2 Sam. 1:21; 1 Kings 10:17; 1 Chr. 12:8, 24, 34; Isa. 22:6; Ezek. 39:9; Nahum 2:3).

Used figuratively of God and of earthly princes as the defenders of their people.

Deut 33:29 "Blessed are you, O Israel; Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, Who is the shield of your help, And the sword of your majesty! So your enemies shall cringe before you, And you shall tread upon their high places."

Smith:

Shields of state were covered with beaten gold. Shields were suspended about public buildings for ornamental purposes. 1Ki 10:17. In the metaphorical language of the Bible, the shield generally represents the protection of God: for example, Psalm 3:3; Psalm 28:7, but in Psalm 47:9, it is applied to earthly rulers and in Eph 6:16, to faith.

Barnes:

The shield was an ingenious device by which blows and arrows might be parried off, and the whole body defended… As long as the soldier had his shield, he felt secure

****

THE FIERY DARTS

Eph 6:16 … you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one.

Clarke:

The fiery darts of the wicked, or devil, are evil thoughts, and strong injections, … and excite the soul to acts of transgression. They are caught on this shield, blunted, and extinguished.

****

Shield of Faith - there is only One Faith

Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Gill:

Above all, taking the shield of faith... God himself is a shield; his divine perfections, as his power, faithfulness, truth, and immutability, which encompass the saints as a shield, and are opposed by faith to the temptations of Satan - Christ is a shield, and faith makes rise of him as a shield, his person, blood, righteousness, and sacrifice; which it holds up and opposes to all the charges and objections of Satan …

Faith to stand firm:

2 Corinthians 1:24 for in your faith you are standing firm.

Faith to face all opposition:

Hebrews 11:32 And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

Therefore:

1Pet 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith

1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world -- our faith. 5 And who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Thy Kingdom come… Amen

Proverbs

YHVH our Shield -

Proverbs 2:7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

We have the promise if we walk in integrity and take our refuge in the Eternal One, He will not only shield us but provide for and preserve us as well. This Hebrew word ‘Magen’ (shield, buckler) figuratively means a protector. The root word ‘Ganan’ means to defend, cover, surround, to hedge about, to protect. What more could we ask for?

****

YHVH, You are a shield to the godly - thus our faith is strengthened - We thank You.

Saying (s)

"The invasion of the Church by the world is a menace to the extension of Christ's Kingdom. In all ages conformity to the world by Christians has resulted in lack of spiritual life and a consequent lack of spiritual vision and enterprise. A secularized or self-centered Church can never evangelize the world." - John R. Mott

It is not hard to visualize how the ‘Church’ becomes secularized when its members fail to hold up the shield of faith. How else can the fiery darts of the evil one penetrate individuals and cause them to forsake the faith once delivered to the saints.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Once we allow compromise with sin it is as the leaven of sin which spreads thru-out the Church and will become a secularized self-centered Church.

****

Father keep us ever vigilant holding up the shield of faith, skillfully warding off the attacks of evil.

Humility

In our pursuit of humility:

(Lessons from humility and faith.)

"Humility and faith are more nearly allied in Scripture than many realize. See it in the life of Christ. There are two cases in which He spoke of great faith. He marveled at the faith of the centurion, saying, "I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith." The centurion had said, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof" (Matthew 8:5-13). And the mother to whom He said, "It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs," replied, "Yes, Lord but even the dogs eat the crumbs." To her, he replied, "Woman you have great faith! Your request is granted" (Matthew 15:22-28). It is humility that brings a soul to be nothing before God and that also removes every hindrance to faith and makes it only fear lest it dishonor Him by not trusting Him completely." Andrew Murray

Faith:

Heb 11:1 NJB Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that are unseen.

May we humbly see our need for the faith that brings the grace of our salvation.

So we say:

Eph 6:23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yeshua, grant us more faith, in our need we humbly ask - Amen

Prayer

Understanding the precepts of prayer.

In Solomon’s wise and comprehensive prayer at the dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem he asked that this could be the focal point for all people to pray toward. Whatever issue personal or corporate anyone for any reason could go to Him for mercy. Each should examine themself before praying - making sure we do so humbly and repentantly for this prayer is to render to each according to his ways.

2Chr 6:28 "If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, if there is locust or grasshopper, if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities, whatever plague or whatever sickness there is, 29 whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Thy people Israel, each knowing his own affliction and his own pain, and spreading his hands toward this house, 30 then hear Thou from heaven Thy dwelling place, and forgive, and render to each according to all his ways, whose heart Thou knowest for Thou alone dost know the hearts of the sons of men, 31 that they may fear Thee, to walk in Thy ways as long as they live in the land which Thou hast given to our fathers.

For all peoples:

2Chr 6:32 "Also concerning the foreigner who is not from Thy people Israel, when he comes from a far country for Thy great name's sake and Thy mighty hand and Thine outstretched arm, when they come and pray toward this house, 33 then hear Thou from heaven, from Thy dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to Thee, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know Thy name, and fear Thee…

****

Our Father in heaven, You know our heart - we humbly come to You for mercy.

Heart of God

How does God feel about issues we face today?

A Balanced Life

It is important to live by both the Spirit and in Truth (law).  Using the example of flying a plane, do we never get off the ground because we are so focused on the law (torah), and keep checking and rechecking the plane, fine tuning it, revving the engine but never taking off because the power, belief or interest in flying is not there? To tinker and fix the plane is the whole focus - the idiosyncrasies of the law, debates and discussions rather than a witness of flying - bringing life to others.  Or on the other hand do we skip the checklist of the torah (instruction on how to walk) before taking off, just going by our gut (Spirit) and thinking everything feels right - I’ve been doing this so long, I know what I am doing, I have experience (Grace), I’ll just go?

God’s law is important because it defines sin. His Spirit is important because it teaches us to stay away from sin. We need both to live a balanced life. Too much of either creates chaos (lawless) or lack of His power (Spirit) working in our life.

God is Spirit. And those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

Be Happy

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

‘I love it,' he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait.'

'That doesn't have anything to do with it,' he replied.

‘Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... It’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. 'It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new Day and all the happy memories I've stored away… Just for this time in my life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory Bank. I am still depositing.

'Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.

2. Free your mind from worries.

3. Live simply.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less.

Doc:   'I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks.  The next time I see you, you should have lost at least 5 pounds."

When Ole returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 60 lbs!

"Why, that's amazing!" the doctor said, "Did you follow my instructions?"

Ole nodded....."I'll tell you now, I taught I wuz gonna trop dead on dat 3rd tay."

"From that hunger, you mean?" asked the doctor.

Ole:  "Oh no, it wuz from all dat skippin'!!!!"

The Modern Church

95 Theses to the Modern Evangelical Church

by Greg Gordon - (founder of SermonIndex.net)

87. Cheap grace means the justification of sin without the justification of the sinner. (2Tim 2:19; 1Pt 4:17-18; 2Tim 3:12)

88. A baptism of holiness, a demonstration of godly living is the crying need of our day. (1Tim 6:3; 2Ths 3:6; 2Ths 2:13)

89. Many are confused about obedience, and good works that are readily mentioned in the Scriptures. (Tit 3:8; Jn 10:32; Rev 3:15)

Continue to Stand

The enemy is attempting to whittle away our resolve, to whittle away our dedication, to dampen our fire, and bring us to a place of sluggish spirituality, a state of spiritual dryness, wherein spiritually speaking we’re just drudging along, getting by from one day to the next, and the very act of spiritual survival seems like an overwhelming and taxing effort.

Every minister I’ve spoken to thus far has confirmed what I’ve been suspecting for a while, the enemy is not employing full frontal assaults, but rather sneak attacks, small jabs and pricks that accumulate over time and both frustrate and weaken us.

Eph 6:16 … taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one.

Who Directs Your Life?

When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, "Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned."

(Numbers 14:39,40; ESV)

In response to Moses' words, the people had a great change of heart and sought to do what God had told them. What God had told them was to enter the Promised Land. Twelve scouts had spied out the land and brought back a mixed report. They all agreed that it was a wondrously fertile land, but only two of the twelve had any confidence that the people could conquer its residents. The ten others honestly thought Israel would be slaughtered. The influence of these ten won over the hearts of the people. The quote I read is the change of heart of at least some of them.

The problem with this supposed change of heart is that God had already pronounced judgment on their lack of faith. They didn't simply struggle with the daunting task before them; they outright rejected God's direction and were preparing to choose a new leader and return to Egypt.

By determining themselves what of God's word they would obey, they demonstrated that they had learned nothing from the sin they confessed.

The real problem … they were nonetheless directing their own lives. They didn't listen to God when he told them to enter the land. They didn't listen to him when he told them they had to return to the wilderness.

No matter how much we invoke God's name, directing our own lives is sin - the same sin our first parents committed in the Garden. True faithfulness to God is about relinquishing control over our lives and obeying his directions on his terms. So when we find ourselves in a predicament due to our own wrongdoing, let us not think we can fix the past by trying to do the right thing after it's too late. Instead let us be attentive to what God is saying to us at that point, letting him and him alone direct our lives.

Psalm Promise

Psalm 3:3

But Thou, O LORD, art a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

The psalmist expresses his faith in YHVH by declaring His perfect shielding - confident of the future because the enemy declared in the previous verse:

Ps 3:2 Many are saying of my soul, "There is no deliverance for him in God." …

He refutes their proclamation by his faith in YHVH’s shielding ability in all things - Trust Him.
