Take heed that no one deceives you.

Can We be deceived?

The MEM has a heart for the Church of Jesus (Yeshua) the Christ (Messiah) - The following are some scriptures, the words, from the Father, to warn us, to be alert, and not be deceived. By His grace He will equip us to avoid unnecessary trials, tribulation and death.

Count the ‘Many’ in Jesus’ warning about end-time Deception

So should we be concerned?

Matt 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

Matt 24:11 "Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. (some versions will have ‘lead many astray’ for ‘deceive many’)

Matt 24:23 "Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

The Apostle Paul is Clear about deception - It is happening

Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel- 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

Gal 5:7 You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from Him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 I have confidence in you in the Lord, that you will adopt no other view; but the one who is disturbing you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.

Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Self-deception?

Gal 6:3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

1Cor 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality…

Bad Company?

1Cor 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Bad company ruins good morals." 34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

Wait a minute Paul - This is the Church you are writing to…!

Source of all deception

Rev 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him

John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Rev 19:20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.

Up to his old self

Rev 20:7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth….

The Deceiver’s end

Rev 20:10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Food for thought; is it ok to deceive? Is there a difference between a lie and deception? What if someone’s life is in danger? What if a deception is for our good? Or what if it is for our judgement? While reading thru the scriptures detect the different purposes for a deception - God does it to work out His will - the enemy does it to steal, kill and destroy.

Our source of help

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. [remember this] I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Put on the Armor of God

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints --

Pray

Luke 21:36 " But keep on the alert at all times, praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

And endure

Matt 24:13 "But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Word study for deceit Derivatives

From Vine’s Dictionary of the NT (edited for length)

[ A-2,Noun,G1388, dolos] primarily "a bait, snare;" hence, "craft, deceit, guile," "deceit," "error", a wandering from the right path;

[ B-1,Adjective,G1386, dolios] "deceitful," of false apostles as "deceitful workers;".

[ C-1,Verb,G538, apatao] "to beguile, deceive" (a) of those who "deceive" "with empty words," belittling the true character of the sins mentioned, (b) of the fact that Adam was "not beguiled,"; (c) of the "self-deceit" of him who thinks himself religious, but bridles not his tongue.

[ C-2,Verb,G1818, exapatao] ek (ex), intensive, "to beguile thoroughly, to deceive wholly,"

[ C-3,Verb,G5422, phrenapatao] "to deceive in one's mind", "to deceive by fancies", with reference to self-conceit, which is "self-deceit," a sin against common sense.

[ C-4,Verb,G1387, dolioo] "to lure," as by a bait.

[ C-5,Verb,G1389, doloo] "to ensnare;" hence, "to corrupt," especially by mingling the truths of the Word of God with false doctrines or notions, and so handling it "deceitfully,". kapeleuo, "to corrupt by way of hucksterizing,".

For Beguiled

[ 3,,G3884, paralogizomai] and primarily, "to reckon wrong," hence means "to reason falsely" or "to deceive by false reasoning;" translated "delude".

[ 4,,G1185, deleazo] "to catch by a bait"; hence "to beguile, "entice;"

Note - The serpents purpose!

In Col 2:18, the verb katabrabeuo, "to give judgment against, condemn," is translated "beguile ... of your reward," AV; RV, "rob ... of your prize." The verb was used of an umpire's decision against a racer…

The First deception

Gen 3:13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (note this is the cross reference for above Rev 12:13)

[Revelation 12:13 (NAS) And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.]

2Cor 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.

2Cor 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Note on 2Cor 11:3

Vine’s NT dictionary [ 2,,G1818, exapatao ] The strengthened form

a strengthened form, is rendered "beguile," 2Cor 11:3; the more adequate rendering would be "as the serpent thoroughly beguiled Eve." So in 1Tim 2:14, in the best mss., this stronger form is used of Satan's deception of Eve, lit., "thoroughly beguiled;" the simpler verb, is used of Adam.

In each of these passages the strengthened form is used. So of the influence of sin, Rom 7:11 (RV, "beguile"); of self-deception, 1Cor 3:18; of evil men, who cause divisions, Rom 16:18 (RV, "beguile"); of deceitful teachers, 2Thess 2:3. [Needless to say - "take heed"]

Our own reasoning can deceive

Deut 11:16 Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; [The truth is there are other gods!]

Deception for the good? To spare life?

1Sam 19:17 Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?" And Michal answered Saul, "He said to me, ‘Let me go. Why should I kill you?’"

What about Rahab and the spies?

What about David when fleeing Saul, seeking bread from the High Priest?

A deception for judgment

Jer 4:10 Then I said, "Ah, Lord God, surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘It shall be well with you,’ whereas the sword has reached their very life."

Deception for our good - our growth

Jer 20:7 O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me.

Let us not be deceived

Luke 21:31 "Even so you, too, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near.

Luke 21:34 "Be on guard, that your hearts may not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day come on you suddenly like a trap; 35 for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. 36 But keep on the alert at all times, praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

For the Church of God - "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Proverbs

Deceit [Falseness]

Proverbs 12:17 He who speaks truth declares righteousness, But a false witness, deceit.

Proverbs 24:28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause, And do not deceive with your lips.

The devil and those influenced by him speaks lies

Proverbs 6:19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

Proverbs 14:5 A faithful witness does not lie, But a false witness will utter lies.

Proverbs 17:4 An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.

Therefore:

Proverbs 19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies shall perish.

Saying(s)

"My God, Sweetness beyond words, make bitter all the carnal comfort that draws me from love of the eternal and lures me to its evil self by the sight of some delightful good in the present. Let it not overcome me, my God. Let not flesh and blood conquer me. Let not the world and its brief glory deceive me, nor the devil trip me by his craftiness. Give me courage to resist, patience to endure, and constancy to persevere. Give me the soothing unction of Your spirit rather than all the consolations of the world, and in place of carnal love, infuse into me the love of Your name."
― Thomas ΰ
Kempis, The Imitation of Christ

"All the significant battles are waged within the self."

Life in Messiah

Deceived

We are familiar with the commandment not to judge others. Those who walk in darkness will tell us this means we are not to distinguish between good and evil. Do not be deceived by this distorted reasoning. For God’s word tells us clearly that fear and unbelief and lust are sins that we are to recognize and avoid. Conversely, there are godly virtues of love and kindness and generosity that we are to seek and emulate. How could there be a clearer distinction? Be diligent to understand the difference and examine our self and judge our self-according to His standard, and we will not be (deceived or) judged.

Psalms

Deceived

Going Astray

Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; They go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.

Psalm 95:10 … I was grieved with that generation, And said, 'It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.'

Psalm 119:176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; Seek Your servant, For I do not forget Your commandments.

Psalm 119:67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

Blessed be YHVH (Genesis 14:20 And blessed be God Most High…)
