Trust and Confidence

A Scriptural word study about trust and confidence finds them closely related. As the economic times become more and more turbulent we need to have our trust and confidence in the surety of the coming Kingdom of God. We will need to trust not in the here and now (in man’s wisdom and efforts) but in the promises of our soon coming King, Yeshua our Savior. May this study re-enforce your confidence in the Living Word. As you go through substitute confidence for trust and vice-versa. It may give you further insight.

Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And his children will have refuge.

1Chronicles 5:20 They were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand; for they cried out to God in the battle, and He answered their prayers because they trusted <0982> in Him.

Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Psalm 112:7 He will not fear evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

Psalm 146:3 Do not trust in princes, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.

Here is our confidence:

Psalm 9:10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Psalm 27:3 Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident <0982>.

Psalm 56:11 In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Jeremiah 17:7 "Blessed is the man who trusts <0982> in the LORD And whose trust <04009> is the LORD. (can be read "And whose confidence is in YHVH)

For those who do not put their trust and confidence in YHVH:

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus says the LORD, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the LORD.

Hosea 10:13 You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, You have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your way, in your numerous warriors,

Proverbs 28:26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool…

The Greek word for confidence:

3954 AV-boldness 8, confidence 6, openly 4, plainly 4,
1) freedom in speaking, unreservedness in speech
1a) openly, frankly, i.e without concealment
1b) without ambiguity or circumlocution

Paul defines confidence for us:

2Corinthians 1:12 For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world…

1John 3:21 if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;

Others should see our confidence:

Acts 4:13 Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.

Confidence enables the saints:

Hebrews 4:16 …let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Acts 4:29 "And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence,

1John 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

No confidence in the flesh:

Philippians 3:3 for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh,

Hebrews 10:35 Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

1John 2:28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.

1John 4:17 By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world.

The Greek for trust is akin to persuade and confidence:

3982: a primary verb; AV-persuade 22, trust 8, obey 7, have confidence 6, believe 3
2a) to be persuaded, to suffer one’s self to be persuaded; to be induced to believe: to have faith
2a1) to believe
2b) to listen to, obey, yield to, comply with
3) to trust, have confidence, be confident

Are you convinced, persuaded to trust, when you hear the Word of YHVH?

Acts 17:4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women.

Acts 28:23 When they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.

What wonderful confidence; are you convinced? Persuaded?

Romans 8:38-39 (NAS) For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Authorized Version Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life,

Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Authorized Version 2Ti 1:12 …for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Trust, convinced, obedient, sure, persuaded, confident, believing, all connected:

Hebrews 2:13 And again, "I WILL PUT MY TRUST <3982> IN HIM." And again, "BEHOLD, I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."

Hebrews 6:9 But, beloved, we are convinced <3982> of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey <3982> your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

Hebrews 13:18 Pray for us, for we are sure <3982> that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.

1John 3:19 We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure <3982> our heart before Him

When we confidently read YHVH’s Word He will witness to us by His Spirit. Therefore if our conscience is not convicted of wrong doing we have confidence, to trust Him, to come before His throne of grace. To seek His face in time of need so we can live boldly, believing He will supply all our needs. He will supply the peace and assurance necessary in the days ahead.

1Chronicles 16:31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns." (read 1Chronicles 16:7-36)

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like the green leaf.

Proverbs 16:20 He who gives attention to the word will find good, And blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

Saying (s)

"Winners expect to win in advance. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. "

When our confidence is in Yeshua (through His Spirit in us) we can expect to win. We can take everything to the throne of grace and expect an answer – trust Him, remember:

Colossians 3:3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

In our pursuit of humility:

"Speaking to the multitude and the disciples, of the Pharisees and their love of the chief seats, Christ said once again, "The greatest among you will be your servant" (Matthew 23:11). Humiliation is the only ladder to honor in God’s kingdom." Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray had a unique insight into how we might resolve the issues we have with our human nature (the flesh). He was totally convinced the only way to the Kingdom was to humble oneself, by picking up Messiah’s cross and following in His footsteps. To be assured of a seat in the Kingdom to come, we must (enabled by the Spirit of Yeshua) become a servant to all. Trust Eloah (God), may your confidence be in YHVH.

Did you know:

Our first line of defense is walking in the light of YHVH. Our second line of defense is being prepared by being aware and informed. Consider the following.

From: "Nancy Williams"

I learned from my children's karate classes that the elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

Last night I attended a personal safety workshop, and it jolted me. It was given by an amazing man, Pat Malone, who has been a body guard for famous figures like Farrah Fawcett and Sylvester Stallone. He works for the FBI and teaches police officers and Navy SEALS hand-to-hand combat. This man has seen it all, and knows a lot. He focused his teachings to us on HOW TO AVOID BEING THE VICTIM OF A VIOLENT CRIME. He gave us some statistics about how much the occurrences of random violence have escalated over the recent years, and it's terrible.

Something like 99% of us will be exposed to, or become a victim of a violent crime.

Here are some of the most important points that I got out of his presentation:

(1.) The three reasons women are easy targets for random acts of violence are:

(a.) Lack of Awareness You MUST know where you are & what's going on around you.

(b.) Body Language Keep your head up, swing your arms, stand straight up.

(c.) Wrong Place, Wrong Time DON'T walk alone in an alley, or drive in a bad neighborhood at night.

(2.) Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc). DON'T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go.

(a.) A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.

(b.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

(c.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

(3.) ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

(4) If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!

(a.)The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

(5.) As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed.

(a.) Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

(b.) Pat Malone told us the story of his daughter, who came out of the mall and was walking to her car when she noticed 2 older ladies in front of her. Then she saw a police car come towards her with cops who said hello. She also noticed that all 8 handicap spots in the area were empty. As she neared her car she saw a man a few rows over calling to her for help. He wanted her to close his passenger side door. He was sitting in the back on the driver's side, and said he was handicapped. He continued calling, until she turned and headed back to the mall, and then he began cursing at her. In the meantime, she wondered why he didn't ask the 2 older ladies, or the policeman for help, and why he was not parked in any of the empty handicap spots. As she got back to the mall, two male friends of hers were exiting, and as she told them the story, and turned to point at the car, the man was getting out of the back seat into the front and the car sped away.

Part Two...

About a month ago there was a woman standing by the mall entrance passing out flyers to all the women going in. The woman had written the flyer herself to tell about an experience she had, so that she might warn other women.

The previous day, this woman had finished shopping, went out to her car and discovered that she had a flat. She got the jack out of the trunk and began to change the flat. A nice man dressed in business suit and carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, "I noticed you're changing a flat tire. Would you like me to take care of it for you?"

The woman was grateful for his offer and accepted his help. They chatted amiably while the man changed the flat, and then put the flat tire and the jack in the trunk, shut it and dusted his hands off. The woman thanked him profusely, and as she was about to get in her car, the man told her that he left his car around on the other side of the mall, and asked if she would mind giving him a lift to his car.

She was a little surprised and she asked him why his car was on other side. He explained that he had seen an old friend in the mall that he hadn't seen for some time and they had a bite to eat and visited for a while; he got turned around in the mall and left through the wrong exit, and now he was running late and his car was clear around on the other side of the mall.

The woman hated to tell him "no" because he had just rescued her from having to change her flat tire all by herself, but she felt uneasy. Then she remembered seeing the man put his briefcase in her trunk before shutting it and before he asked her for a ride to his car. She told him that she'd be happy to drive him around to his car, but she just remembered one last thing she needed to buy. She said she would only be a few minutes; he could sit down in her car and wait for her; she would be as quick as she could be.

She hurried into the mall, and told a security guard what had happened; the guard came out to her car with her, but the man had left. They opened the trunk, took out his locked briefcase and took it down to the police station. The police opened it (ostensibly to look for ID so they could return it to the man).

What they found was rope, duct tape, and knives. When the police checked her "flat" tire, there was nothing wrong with it; the air had simply been let out. It was obvious what the man's intention was, and obvious that he had carefully thought it out in advance.

The woman was blessed to have escaped harm. How much worse it would have been if she had children with her and had them wait in the car while the man fixed the tire, or if she had a baby strapped into a car seat. Or if she'd gone against her judgment and given him a lift.

A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle.

Lighter Side

The old Cherokee chief sat in his reservation hut, smoking the ceremonial pipe, eyeing the two US government officials sent to interview him.

"Chief Two Eagles," one official began, "you have observed the white man for many generations, you have seen his wars and his products, you have seen all his progress, and all his problems."

The chief nodded.

The official continued, "Considering recent events, in your opinion, where has the white man gone wrong?

"The chief stared at the government officials for over a minute, and then calmly replied.

"When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes. No debt.

Plenty buffalo, Plenty beaver. Women did most of the work. Medicine man free. Indian men hunted and fished all the time" The chief smiled, and added quietly, "White man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

A Commentary

Why no Revival? (Continued from MEM 65)

6. An attitude of "the love of reputation": This really is just "the fear of man" or pride (see John 12:42-43 for a glimpse of it). We have a great fear of "losing our dignity" (we mistakenly think that we have some dignity), or having others think that we "don't have it all together." This is the essence of the heart of a hypocrite. "What will people think if I humble myself and surrender totally to God?" Well, what will God think if you don't? "Poor man, I saw him weeping over his sins in church." We should pity the person who has never cried over the revelation of their sins as God reveals them! I believe that it may even be right to question the salvation of the person who has never wept over their sins in the presence of a Holy God. We are called to be a holy people, different and separate from the world. If the world feels at home with us, then it is right to assume that "the offense of the cross" has ceased. 2 Tim. 3:12. The only important thing is "What does God think?" We must take off our church masks and get honest with God and become real with one another. We must come to the place where we can honestly say, "I'm not afraid of holiness. I'm not going to be afraid of going all the way with God, cost whatever it may."

7. An attitude of ignorance of God's Word: Psalm 11:3 states, "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" Hosea tells us that God's people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge of God. Jesus said to the Pharisees in Mark 12:24, "Do you not therefore err because you do not know the scriptures, neither the power of God?" All throughout the Bible and history, revival has come only as God's people begin to take His word and His promises seriously. Search the scriptures, and let them search you! Fifty years ago the average lost man in America knew more of God's word than the average saved man does today! We are way too accustomed to eating "second-hand" Truth. For the baby, milk is simply food that someone else has digested. We live in a day of darkness and man-made light. Cults flourish, and the church languishes in large measure because we do not know the Word of God. It is high time for the church to return to the Bible! The only hope that the world has is that the Church will once again see herself in God's mirror and be provoked to put on her beautiful garments in response to HIS revelation. The world must hear an anointed, "Thus saith the Lord," from an obedient church.

8. An attitude of disunity: Factions in the body are a proof of carnality. This grieves and quenches the Holy Spirit greatly. "Discord" is the very opposite of the "one accord" that we read of in the book of Acts that made her such a mighty vessel of God. Unforgiveness hidden in the church is like a bullet left in the body! Are we more concerned about our opinions and interests than we are the honor of God? The Bible says that "only by pride comes contention"(Prov. 13:10). Divisions will leave as we humble ourselves at the level ground of the cross. One of the watchwords of the great Welch revival was "Bend the church and save the world." So often a great move of God has broken forth when proud, dis-unified believers have obeyed the scriptures and humbly sought forgiveness of one another. Will we do it?

9. An attitude of compromise: Proverbs 14:14 says, "The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways." Compromise never happens because of ignorance. It is a sin against light! It is a "going back" on what God has shown us to our "own ways". He whispered; we were stirred; yet we forgot, ignored, suppressed or disobeyed the truth. We can rationalize our unwillingness to obey God many ways, but none of them is valid! Are we willing to suffer for righteousness sake? The devil wants to lure us into a thousand things that will dull us to the Truth and cause us to become passive and bored with, or distracted from, the deep things of God. We live in a day when the world has become "churchy," and the church has become worldly. Sometimes it is very hard to tell who is who. Would you agree? But the Lord knows those who are His, even those who have been squeezed into the mold of the world. He will have mercy on the one who responds fully to His call. It's time to break out of the mold of the world and to be conformed to HIS image. We must not sidestep the real issues that the Holy Spirit brings to our hearts. Calvary must always precede Pentecost! Refuse to tolerate areas in your heart that you find yourself excusing to God or others.

10. An attitude of prayerlessness: Real revival is always transported to earth on the wings of the desperate, believing prayers of God's people. God will not do, apart from prayer, what He has promised to do in answer to prayer. He will wait until we come to Him with humble, repentant, believing hearts. The greatest moves of God always follow prayer. We can try everything known to man to make things better or take care of our difficulties, but nothing will work. Without the heartbeat of prayer, the body of Christ will resemble a corpse. The church is dying on her feet because she is not living on her knees. It is time to seek His face, individually and corporately. Let us turn to the Lord with all our beings and realize that God yearns to send revival on His people even more than we claim to want it.

God is faithful to His word. Nobody wants a revived church more than He does. If we will remove the hindrances to real fellowship with Him and seek Him as He longs to be sought and found, then He will surely pour out His glorious Life-giving Spirit on us. Why is there no revival? It is only because His church has been content to try to live without it. "Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved."
